The Foundation

In building our dream home, an everlasting marriage, we have picked the best lot and now are focusing on the foundation for our home.

A structural foundation consists of three parts:

1: the bedding,

2: the footing, and

3: the wall.

The bedding is usually the earth upon which the foundation rests.  The footing spreads the weight of the home over the bed while firmly anchoring the foundation in the earth.  Then, the wall supports the home on the footing and holds it above grade.

Applying these concepts to our marriage, we see that its foundation, too, has 3 parts (3 persons):  God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.  Our marriage rests on the Father, the bedding.  Then, Jesus Christ, the footing spreads Himself out upon the cross so we could be reconciled with the Father.  Thus, He spreads the weight of our marriage, joys and trials, over the Father.  In a structural foundation, the footing is probably the most important part of the house.  If the footing settles or moves so will the house.  Jesus, as the footing of our marriage foundation never settles, moves, or changes (Heb.13:8).  Also, building inspectors usually check the location of the footings before they are poured to make certain the footings are deep enough and resting on undisturbed earth.  We must continuously check the depth of our marriage in Jesus Christ, our footing (Ps 139:23).

Then, the wall of our marriage foundation is the Holy Spirit.  He supports our marriage on Jesus Christ and holds our marriage above reproach.  The Holy Spirit teaches; reminds; comforts; helps our weaknesses; reveals things of God; convicts, and empowers us.  He gives us the mind of Christ and helps us live holy lives.

We must be sure to build our dream home on God the Rock - a strong firm foundation.  It may cost you much in the beginning but the blessing of an everlasting marriage will out weigh any cost.
